About Cargos & Cakes...

What is a Cargo bike?

These bikes can carry up to 1-3 children within them with ease, and are often electric to make life much easier for parents and to tackle hills. They come in a variety of models, including 3 wheeler trikes where children sit in the front, or 2 wheeler long tails, where children sit at the back. They are becoming increasingly common throughout London - so you'll soon see one whooshing by you!

What is a Cargos & Cakes event?

Think of it as a speed date between families who are thinking about buying a cargo bike, and families who have already taken the plunge! It’s an opportunity to chat about how these bikes are working for families and to get answer for common concerns:

  • What's the most affordable option? (Try the Our Bike community share for just £3/hour)

  • What happens when it rains? (rain covers can keep kids dry).

  • Will the kids fight? (Often! As they do in cars).

  • How young can you start? (There are baby seats for 2 month olds available).

The events are held in playgrounds and parks, around school hubs, and connect like-minded families share the joy of cargo biking and help them catch on in South Lambeth and Southwark.

What's so good about cargo bikes?

We believe cargo bikes are a big part of the answer, when it comes to greener and cleaner school runs. Our unique data insights show that the majority of school run car trips in Lambeth and Southwark are journeys of between 1-2 miles to primary schools. This is journey-type where parents are struggling to walk or cycle their children to school. Perhaps it is too long to walk with young children & get back in time to start work. Or the 1.8 mile trip is not yet safe enough for a 5 year old to cycle? We think cargo bikes are perfect for these distances, especially with the cycle lanes and school streets that are popping up. Already have a cargo bike? Want to see safe, storage & better facilities in the borough?
